Final night of Springsteen’s three-night stint at the club. First confirmed "Does This Bus Stop At 82nd Street?" for the tour, and last known "Then She Kissed Me" until 2008. As throughout the tour, "For You" is solo piano. "Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)" includes a snippet of "Theme From Shaft" in the midsection. The above-mentioned 15-song setlist (which may be the complete show - it’s certainly close to it) is taken from a soundboard recording of one of the three Electric Ballroom shows during this residency - the specific show has yet to be positively identified but it is now generally listed by the collector community under the final night of August 23. This audio has a long, somewhat disjointed collector history - nine of the tracks first appeared in the '80s on a vinyl bootleg called ‘Atlanta Georgia 1975' (no label). Years later a few more tracks from the show appeared on the CD boot 'It's Gonna Work Out Fine' (Scorpio). More recently all 15 known songs from the show have appeared on the CD boot ‘Sparks On The Ballroom' (Godfather). However it should be noted that there have always been significant flaws in the source tape of this show available to bootleggers - both “Born To Run” and “She’s The One” suffer from wobble and several other songs (“4th Of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)”, “The E Street Shuffle”, “It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City” and “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)”) suffer from nuisance edits and cuts.

Stunning setlist for the second night in Gothenburg, the highlight of which is clearly the return of "Jungleland", the first time it has been played since the death of Clarence Clemons in June 2011. Unsurprisingly it was dedicated to The Big Man. If that's not enough there's also the tour debuts of "Lost In The Flood" (by request), "Frankie" and "Where The Bands Are". The full-band "Frankie" was last played September 2003, in Boston. The last time "Lost In The Flood", "Backstreets" and "Jungleland" were all played in the same set was back in September 1978, at the Masonic Temple Theatre in Detroit, MI. The wet show opens with "Who'll Stop The Rain", and the 31-song set also includes "Downbound Train", "I'm Goin' Down" and an outstanding "It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City", played by request. Bruce said it was the song that got him his record deal, back in May 1972. Prior to the show Steve tweeted, "There's something about the thought of fans waiting out in the rain all day that makes us crazy. I feel one for the ages coming on." He was right!

First night out of two. Sunny weather and a Bruce on high spirit.
I can´t go on the second night  but I´m sure it will be amazing.

"We are alive" was the first extra number and I had to change battery so I missed the first things that Bruce said to the audience but it was only like 30 sec or so. The sound turned out to be OK too, there are some claping and singing and some talk but I guess that´s something that we have to live with.

Audience tape. Famous concert when Bruce returned to the stage after the house lights went on to perform the last two numbers to a stunned remaining few. Excellent show includes the first version of "Pretty Flamingo" since the '75 tour. Released on CD 'Pretty Flamingo' (BM), 'This Is For The Crazies' (Anubis) and in superior quality as 'Seattle, Ho Ho Ho' (Ev2) from the master reels. This transfer includes the flawed "Badlands" and "Streets Of Fire".

1. Cut

Finally. There are a handful of shows in the annals of Brucedom that have taken on legendary status and Seattle Center Arena '78 is one of them. In this particular case the legend owes to the show being written about passionately and extensively by the Springsteen fanzine Backstreets. And for good reason: its not only a stunning, late-tour performance with some notable changes from the Winterland broadcast just five days earlier, but it famously includes a two-song bonus encore that began some 10-15 minutes after the show had ended, the lights had come up and the crew was starting to take down the stage. Of the few hundreds still left in the arena at that moment, Taper Hall of Famer (if only there was such a thing) S of JEMS was there, and when Bruce and the band returned he started the deck back up to capture the shocking results. Of note is the fact that this show was recorded on a Tandberg reel to reel in full-track mono which means every millimeter of tape was going in one direction and capturing the sound across the entire width of the tape. That gives this recording a depth that even the best audience cassettes of the tour don't have good as they are. Wider tape, faster speed, better recording. As the only known recording of this show, JEMS' tape has circulated before and it is the originating source of the bootlegs Pretty Flamingo and This Is For the Crazies. The latter was a material upgrade to the former but never has this show been presented from the true masters. Nor have the first two songs of the show widely circulated in part because they are cut due to some technical difficulties that night. For this fresh 2009 transfer, every minute JEMS recorded is available for the first time including the start of the show where you can hear the problems that were eventually rectified by the end of "Streets of Fire." When the surprise encore happened at the end of the night and its second song, "Twist and Shout," began, S turned the recording speed down one notch to make sure he had enough tape to get it. The quality drops slightly because of that but the tradeoff was "Twist" is preserved in its entirety.

This 24/96 capture from the master reels and the original deck was then passed to EV2 for his mastering touch which, though light, makes a difference. The show is being presented both in CD-friendly 16/44.1 (remastered into "stereo" from the mono source) and high-res 24/96 (straight mono, which helps keep the file size down) versions. If you ever wanted to hear the benefit of an analog audience tape benefitting from 24/96, this might be your test case. There are many highlights to be had, too numerous to mention really, but if you have heard about this show or even if you haven't, its one of the key Springsteen audience tapes to get.  And it has never sounded better than it does now. Samples provided.

A real marathon tonight, the longest show in Springsteen's known performing history clocking in at an incredible three hours and 48 minutes. Southside Johnny joins Bruce on stage for "Talk To Me", which is performed by (a rather convenient) sign request. "The River" is dedicated to Nacho, a 20-year-old who died of cancer a couple of days before this show, for which he had a ticket. Premiere of "Spanish Eyes", one of three songs tonight from The Promise. There's another airing for "Be True", and also the third "My Love Will Not Let You Down" of the tour. Patti is at home with the kids.

  • Brucebase Info (13.08.1975)

Two separate admission shows, 8:30pm and 11:30pm. Opening of an historic five-night (ten-show) residency at the club. Springsteen & The E Street Band had previously played a three-night (six-show) residency here in July 1974. Bottom Line co-owner Allan Pepper was offered the chance to host Bruce and the band at the club by Sam McKeith (Bruce's booking agent at William Morris) one morning by phone. Columbia Records bought a quarter of the 500 tickets available for the stand, a perfect opportunity to expose employees and journalists to the upcoming talent of Springsteen. There is no circulating audio of the early show on this opening night, but in 2012 an audience recording of the late show finally emerged into the trading pool. The tape features the first known live performance of "Night", and the earliest known recording of "When You Walk In The Room". Both "Kitty's Back" and "New York City Serenade" are extended 19+ minute renditions. Opener and tour premiere "For You" is played by Bruce alone at the piano and "Thunder Road" is the slow version with Roy on piano and Bruce on harmonica and vocals. This is the last recorded and confirmed performance of "New York City Serenade" until the 1999/200 Reunion Tour when it was resurrected with a slightly more sensible running time.

1. Bruce on piano

2. First known performance

The story of Bruce’s early days has been documented many times, most recently in the current New Yorker magazine.  As described therein, Bruce’s five night, ten show stint at The Bottom Line was crucial to launching his third album, Born to Run.  Many executives at Columbia Records were frustrated with Bruce’s lack of commercial success and Born to Run was likely his last chance with the label.  Columbia reportedly bought a quarter of the 500 seats for each show to distribute among music industry people to help spread the word.  Even so, tickets did not sell out immediately and a week after going on sale they were available for any of the shows.  That all ended when the public heard WNEW’s broadcast of show number 5.  The next two nights, fans were lined up around the corner with the hope of getting a standing room spot at the bar to hear the new phenom.

This is the first recording of one of the late shows to surface.  It is the first night and this tape captures all of the ambiance of this intimate club.  You can hear each breath and whisper  from Bruce while dishes and glasses are shuffled on the tables. Bruce seems to just appear behind the piano and gets a single reaction from the crowd as he opens solo with For You.  It is evident how he captures the crowd more and more with each song.  By the time he hits the 20 minute versions of Kitty’s Back and New York City Serenade, he has them in his hands.
